I had the opportunity to engage in a personal values exercise last week. From a list of over 200 personal values, I was to go through a check those that spoke to me, that leaped out at me. Then the task was to group them in similar categories. Done. The idea was to get to less than 10 of them - I ended up with 9. Then, it was tie to write my own definition of each of those values and figure out how they exist in my business.
On the first Sunday of 2021, I created my definitions and was totally amazed at how they really were me and what I valued. Sure, there are other things too and I'm sure it will change over time. But on this the 7th day of 2021, I revisited them and tweaked a couple. My list of nine are:
Over this year, I will share my definitions and why these are so meaningful to me on both a personal and business level. But today, let me just talk a little on Equality. It just seems appropriate to begin with it after witnessing the unimaginable yesterday where fellow citizens sought to overthrow the very seat of our democracy. I am so deeply saddened that polarization has become so entrenched. I believe in the innate goodness of the human being, that there is more to unite us than divide us. I believe there is room for us all to live fruitful lives filled with abundance in a community that cares for one another.
My definition is "Equality is the end result of respect, fairness and acceptance. To reach it, these and other values are key - one must explore what prevents equality from existing, must be clear about what one can do to foster it, must have the integrity to live it, to view every other person as one with potential, and to allow every single person the freedom to be their best self.
Fairness. Respect. Acceptance. Is it too much to ask?
